Some of the most magical nature books for kids are the ones that celebrate forests, animals, and the quiet wonder of fairies. So in honor of St. Patrick’s day, when it seems the veil between folklore and fantasy is thinnest, here are a few that have enchanted me the most.

Favorite Nature & Fairy Books
These are some of my favorite books I’ve read as a child, and now with my children. Stories about woodland animals, forest paths, tiny fairies hidden among flowers, and quiet winter nights on the farm seem to invite one into the natural world in a way nothing else can.
Children of the Forest

Here’s one going back to my childhood, a charming woodland story by Elsa Beskow about tiny forest children living among flowers, streams, and mushrooms. Complete with a troll, fairies, and a surprise ending.
Flower Fairies Magical Doors

This whimsical Flower Fairies book invites children to open actual flaps and doors to step into their secret fairy world…
Think very advanced pop up book…
The Tomten

Keeping with the Nordic tradition, we have The Tomten. I loved this story so much that I named my soul-mate cat Tomten, because—just like the little guardian in the folklore—he makes his rounds through the house each night, quietly visiting every member of the family before the long winter sleep.
The Illustrated Compendium of Amazing Animal Facts

I love everything about this book; the colors, the texture, the whimsical artwork, and the fact that every one of these incredible animal facts is completely true.
It’s the kind of book children can flip through again and again, discovering fascinating little details about the natural world.
Flower Fairies of the Spring

One of Cicely Mary Barker’s most beloved fairy books, Flower Fairies of the Spring pairs delicate illustrations with gentle poems celebrating the flowers of early spring. Each fairy represents a real plant, making the book both magical and quietly educational.
Flower Fairies of The Summer

In Flower Fairies of the Summer, Ms. Barker continues readers into the next season of delicate flower fairies. Featuring illustrations and gentle poems, it captures the magic of nature in full bloom.
Flower Fairies of The Autumn

Continuing on, she brings the beauty of the fall season to life with delicate fairy illustrations inspired by autumn leaves, berries, and late-blooming flowers.
NOTE: They also offer a single volume with all 4 of the seasons in one book, but these individually are such a perfect, sweet little size, my toddler adores carrying them around and they fit her so perfectly.
Flower Fairies of The Winter

And then to complete the set,we have Flower Fairies of the Winter, celebrating the quiet magic of the winter season with delicate fairy illustrations inspired by holly, snowdrops, and other winter plants.
Annie and the Wild Animals

In Annie and the Wild Animals, Jan Brett weaves a cozy winter tale about a girl hoping for a new pet while curious woodland animals quietly gather outside her snowy home
Flower Fairies Magical Secret Garden

Children step into an enchanted woodland filled with glowing flowers, fluttering butterflies, and delicate flower fairies. Pop-ups and hidden surprises make this book feel like discovering a secret garden of magic.
Flower Fairies Sticker Storybook

The book introduces children to real plants while capturing the magic of the natural world, with over 150 colorful stickers!
The Tale of Two Bad Mice

The Kids’ Nature Book
In The Tale of Two Bad Mice, Beatrix Potter introduces two mischievous mice who stumble upon a dollhouse and create quite a bit of chaos inside. With delicate illustrations and timeless storytelling, it’s a charming classic that my children find hilarious.
The Kids’ Nature book

In The Kids’ Nature Book, Susan Milord invites children to explore the outdoors through hundreds of creative nature activities, experiments, and observations designed to spark curiosity about the natural world.
This has an educational activity for every day of the year!
The Fairy Necklaces

This story captivated me as a child and remains one of my favorites even today. In the tale, a young girl living in difficult circumstances receives magical necklaces that quickly change the course of her life.
Very Last First Time

Readers follow a young Inuit girl as she gathers the courage to explore beneath the sea ice while collecting mussels for the first time alone, discovering both the beauty of the Arctic world and her own growing independence as she races to surface before the tide returns.
There is something timeless about stories that celebrate the mysteries of the natural world. Whether through delicate flower fairy legends, quiet winter guardians, curious woodland animals, or fascinating facts about the creatures around us, these books remind children that the world outside their door is full of wonder.
If you have a favorite nature-inspired children’s book that belongs on this list, I would love to hear about it!
